Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens

A highly practical medium telephoto lens with superb delineation and portability. Images are sharp and clear at all apertures. Through computer simulations, the lens has been designed to give beautiful background blur. Since the front lens group does not rotate during focusing special filter effects are not affected.

I love this lens. The only trouble I have is deciding if I like my 50 or my 85 more!

Pros:
Great clarity and sharpness. Fast focus.
Cons:
None that i have found.
Comments:
I originally bought this same lens in Feb. 07 although I lost it in Sept. 07. There was no question as to what the replacement would be -- another one just like it. Exceptional lens, outstanding sharpness. It''s my No. 1 portrait lens.

Pros:
Lens produces beautiful images with sharp contrast and strong bokeh, even at f/1.8. I did extensive research before purchasing this lens, and I agree with all other critics that state this lens ought to be a L-series lens given the great photographs it can produce.
Cons:
No cons in my opinion, but beware that this is a fixed focal lens, which might be a challenge for users who are accustomed to using a zoom lens.
Comments:
Overall, this is a great lens for the money!!

Pros:
Excellent background blur. With proper aperture choice, incredible 3D quality can be created. Very fast lens, no distortion, sharp and clear. Light weight.
Cons:
No hood. For the type and quality of lens this is, I think all buyers would gladly have paid $20 more to have the hood come with the lens.
Comments:
I personally think this is my best lens for portraits. However, to make the most of it, you really need to select your background and foreground well. The nature of this lens is that at the largest aperture setting, with the most beautiful background blur, the area of focus is quite small. It is important to select the background such that wherever it blurs, it blurs nicely. To give an example: if you place a person in front of a flat white wall, there is no blurring visible, so you loose the reason for which you got this lens the first place! Thus rather than choosing a flat one-color and single-depth background, choose a busy one but choose well! If you want bokeh (round bubbly shiny things in the background), chose the subject such that the background has many small busy things in it, perhaps some moving, and with light falling on the background and not on your subject. Like trees with leaves, flowers, waterfall, etc. To get a very impressionistic blur, place the subject into a place with a variety of colors and sizes of color, some perhaps moving--like a flowering tree, for example. This will create a pastel blur where nothing in the background is recognizable. Beautiful! And select the foreground accordingly, since that too can be blurred well to get a 3D setup. And finally, you can create very unusual shots by focusing on a stable subject while another is in motion (like laugh or turn). This way you will get one very sharp and focused person, the rest will be in motion with motion lines, and the background will be blurred to perfection! I think this is a fascinating lens! But it takes a bit of expertise to make the most of it. So practice, practice, practice--I took 600 shots the first day I got the lens! It is digital so just trash the bad images until you get good ones!
