i did a previousl review expressing total dissatisfaction w/ the lens because EVERY photo i took (over 200) was not in focus (even when using tripod). i took my camera (EOS 5D) and my new lens to my local camera shop. it turned out to be that the UV filter and the Polarizer filter i bought w/ the lens are absolutely crap (very technical term :) ). without those filters, the photos are great.

Pros:
Full range for tele. Quick auto or manual focus. Very crisp from 100- to 350mm. Great for locking on a bird in flight and tracking it from there with multiple exposures. Easy to take on and off the camera, even when tripod mounted. Setting the Camera ISO at 400 offers tremendous range to the flexibility of setting for a lens this size.
Cons:
Hard to put on or remove lens cap when front hood is on. Doesn''t like to be out beyond 350mm. Sometimes a little soft on focus in extreme range. Especially when couples with a Canon 2x extender (regardless of speed and opening)
Comments:
In the Birding Hotspots of Texas, all the serious photographer seem to have it as thier lens (coupled with a 30d or 40d) as either their primary lens, or as the accesory camera for grab shots when a much larger lens is tripod mounted on another camera. It seem to be the standard among birding photographers as the camera for quick uses.

Pros:
none - so far.
Cons:
slow AF. blurry, blurry, blurry.
Comments:
i read good reviews on this lens, so i saved my pennies for months to buy it. i received my lens the other day and have taken a couple of hundred pitures. so far it is absolutely HORRIBLE. NONE of my photos are in focus. i have tried freeholding it, bracing it against something, using my monopod and using my tripod. even pictures taken using my tripod are not quite in focus. it seems higher shudder speeds are even worse. i have tried AF on, i have tried manual, and i have tried image stabilizer on and off. even as i look thru the viewfinder to take a picture, it does not not in focus. i am soooooooo disappointed. at this point i can only hope that i received a defective lens. i have gone back to my 75-300 (with no image stabilizer) and have great shots (so the problem is not the camera). any thoughts or suggestions? please email me directly: ssgesq56@yahoo.com. thanks.

Pros:
An excellent lens. The IS (Image Stabilization) is more effective than I expected. Hand held at 1/60 and 400mm was totally doable. This was a gift for my nature/wildlife photographer wife. She has yet to any photos with any of here other lenses.
Cons:
The IS is surprisingly loud in a quiet room, but not noticeable when outdoors.
Comments:
No problems with PC Nation either.

Pros:
Easy to use and excellent pics.
Cons:
Naturally for a lens this size, it is heavy and too big for the wife to handle!
Comments:
Overall it is a fantastic lens. As with any lens it has it''s little quirks, with the AF in the on position and zoomed out to 400, if the subject is small it may focus on the surrounding close objects. I have found that it can be tweaked with the focusing ring after it has autofocused.

Pros:
Great lens for sports. Gets the shot from other end of the field! So far this is a great lens, best one yet for this amateur photograher
Cons:
Some wait time for focus when fast moving sport shots, but worth the wait to get that great shot.
Comments:
Would recommend this lens for anyone wanting to get closer than the 200mm lens.

Pros:
It''s a Canon 100-400 L-Series, Great optics, Image Stabilizer, Multiple photo op''s with one lense. It''s a goto...
Cons:
The only drawback, it''s heavy, but worth it''s weight.
Comments:
PC, Nation, fast shipping, least expensive, most efficient & no hidden costs. Very upfont and reliable. I shop online, almost exclusivley, and PC Nation ranks at the top of my list.

Pros:
Quality
Cons:
Weight
Comments:
Have only used it once so far for an eagle watch. Although heavy, practiced use of the telescoping movement makes the lens easy enough to use when hand held and the quality of the pictures was excellent. Haven''t yet added any filters; still in the early stages of use.
